guided response

Sold by Patricia McCormick
Lakshimi is the main character in the book Sold. I like her a lot because she is a strong independent girl. She knows what they are doing in the house is wrong and she tries to not be a part of it, but she has to be. I think she deserves praise in this book so far because she is going through something no one wants their child, sister, niece, granddaughter to go through. Lakshimi is stuck in the whore house until she can pay off her debt but, by the looks of it she’s going to be there for a long time because her “owner” is cheating her out of her money she makes. Her “owner” isn’t only doing it to Lakshimi but she is doing it to all the other girls as well. Lakshimi doesn’t know what to do, but she never gives up and I think she deserves praise for that. She hates being there so she thinks of her home and how things were there and her mother’s cooking and her hugs to keep her from going mad and I think once again she deserves praise for that. I put myself in her position and I just think if that’s where I ended up I would be devastated because there is no way for me to communicate with my mom and tell her how I’m doing because I’m constantly watched. I would be so scared of everything and cry all the time wanting to go back home but Lakshimi doesn’t, she stays strong and just tries to make it.

free choice

Sold by Patricia McCormick
Reading Sold makes me angry while reading it. I feel so bad for Lakshimi. She has no idea what she is about to get into. I think that her step father screwed her over. I think he had to of known what was going to happen to her. I don’t think that he is a very good man, because all he does is gamble and lose money. Lakshimi also didn’t even know what was going to happen she was all excited about going to be a maid and helping the family out all at the same time and then she realizes that it’s not at all  what he step dad and her mom thought that she was going to do. I think that Lakshimi is a strong stubborn person because her “owner” said that she was going to starve unless she had sex with the men that she sent to be with her in her room and she went 5 days without food or water and wasn’t giving in because she thought that is was wrong. I’m with her; I don’t think that it’s right. Eventually though, she had to sleep with the men in order to get money so she could help her family. It made me really mad when her “owner” cheated her out of her money so she may have to be there for awhile till she gets enough. I don’t get why people have houses and do this. I don’t get why they have young girls prostitute because so many things could go wrong. Like they could get a disease or get pregnant and they wouldn’t know what to do because they are like 13. I think that prostitution is wrong especially if they are so young like Lakshimi.

Sold

Sold by: Patricia McCormick
I like books that are somewhat based on a true story. Like the last book we read, it was on a school shooting and school shootings happen. Or like a book I read about a girl getting raped and girls get raped all the time. So this book could be true, I’m sure this has happened to someone out there and it’s about a girl’s step dad who sells her into prostitution without her knowing it. The book is called Sold and it has a little Indian girl on it. Sold is a pretty significant title for the book because it goes along with the book. The little girl that is only 13 is sold into prostitution because her step father is in gambling debt and needs a way to pay it off. I’m upset with the step father because I don’t even think that the mother knows because if she knew then I’m sure that none of it would have happened. The little girl thought she was just going to go and be a maid for the “rich city people” so she has no idea what’s going on either. I think Sold is a really good name for the book because it catches people’s eyes. It defiantly caught my eye when I saw it because I wanted to know what was being “sold.” I didn’t know if they were selling food, or a house, or a mother selling her child or what. To be Sold is a good name for the book because it makes you want to pick it up and read the back to see what’s going on and what is being sold.

my opinion

Hate list by Jennifer Brown.
Our class just finished reading the book Hate List. I think the book could have been a lot better than what is was. I had a lot of emotions when reading the book because I would always myself in their place and see how they would feel. I was kind of mad at the author because she gave away who the shooter was and that he died. For me it kind of ruined the book a little bit and made it hard to read. It made it hard to stay focused and not get bored. I also thought there was going to be more about Jeremy. I thought that he was going to confess that he made Nick do it or something, but they didn’t say anything about him. He was just done being talked about at the beginning. Some questions that I wondered was, how did Nick meet Jeremy? What made Nick want to start doing pot and just forget about Valerie? Why did Jeremy and his parents know so much about Val and Val not know anything about him? Why wasn’t Jeremy mentioned again throughout the story? It believe that this book is for today’s readers, I don’t think that it is out dated because school shootings do happen and a lot of people are killed. I think it is strange that Valerie’s dad blames it all on her. She didn’t know what Nick was going to do, and she wasn’t trying to tear the family up. I was really shocked that her dad had an affair with his assistant, and I think he went a little over board when he picked her up at the gas station after she was threaten by troy with a gun. It was like he didn’t even care and It was her fault that he did it. So all in all, I think Hate List was an okay book but it could have been a lot better in my opinion.

The Pact

The Pact
By: Jodi Picoult
I liked this book a lot because it kept me interested and I didn't get bored.  People kept texting me when I was trying to read it and I got mad so I shut my phone off so I could understand what was going on. In the book these two teenagers were dating and she got pregnant and I got really mad at Emily when she wanted to kill herself because she got pregnant and it mad me think why would someone who just got pregnant kill themselves? Why wouldn’t they just have the baby and put it up for adoption because then she would still live and so would the baby if she didn’t want to keep the child. So it just frustrated me that she wanted to kill herself and the baby. Through out this book just made me mad because she told Chris that she wanted to kill herself and he AGREED! When the important parts of the book came up some of the words were in italics. Some big questions that came up in the text were abortion, suicide, and murder.  Is abortion good or bad? Should she commit suicide or shouldn’t she? She Chris kill her or help her? The whole book was pretty intense. I learned that if someone wanted to kill themselves no matter how much you love them you should still go get them help. The weirdest part of the book I thought was when Chris just agreed with everything and didn’t try to stop her. He took his gun that he has for hunting and just shot her because she couldn’t do it. It was just dumb because they were best friends and then they were dating and BOOM. Another weird part I thought was when she didn’t even tell him she was pregnant. I think this book is for everybody. It’s a good book and keeps readers interested.

2)      She didn’t want to transfer because she thought it would be harder. She wouldn’t have any friends at the other school and she didn’t want them to start talking about her or spread rumors when they didn’t really know what went on.
3)      He read Shakespeare because his mom would sometimes forget to pay the electric bill. His grandma would bring over Shakespeare book for him to read.

5)      She didn’t know that Nick was going to go on a killing spree. She just thought he was going to yell at Jessica not shoot her. She didn’t know that she was going to kill/shoot everybody on the “list” she just made it to release her anger.

Free Choice 1

One of the books that I have read in the past was The Slow Moon by Elizabeth Cox. I thought it was a good book because I couldn’t put it down. I read this book in high school just to read it because I had nothing else to do. When I read books I put myself in their position and ask myself what I would do if that happened to me. I had a few emotions go through me when reading the slow moon. I was curious, and scared at times throughout the book because the Sophie was just waiting for her boyfriend Crow to come back from the truck and she starts to hear noises and then the next thing you know Sophie was getting raped. I noticed that when something was said and it was important, it was in italics. When I was reading the slow moon I didn’t understand why Crow’s friends would rape his girlfriend? He didn’t do anything to them to deserve it and even if he did Sophie didn’t have to get raped. I think this book contains relevance for the audience reading it because it’s actually interesting, mysterious, somewhat scary, and a love story. I felt bad for Crow because everyone started to hate him because they all thought he raped her because his pants and wallet were found at the scene where Sophie was raped. Crows life was sucking and he didn’t know what to do. When Crow found out who it was he went beat them up. If I was Crow I would have done the same thing. When the book ended I was disappointed because I wanted there to be more!
